Demelza Poldark was, to my mind, the very essence and justification of the drama itself. There was in her manner a delicacy of feeling joined with a firmness of spirit that rendered her at once admirable and endearing. Grace was her constant companion, yet it was never contrived; beauty attended her, yet she seemed wholly unconscious of it. In observing her, one found oneself improved, for her every action conveyed a quiet lesson in dignity, compassion, and strength of heart. Such a character does not merely entertain—it refines the observer, awakening within the soul those gentler virtues which the world, in its haste, so often forgets to value.
