Teach me about physics at 73 years of age. I’m a beginner.

🌟 Step 1: What Is Physics?

Physics is the study of how things move, interact, and change. It explains everything from falling apples to orbiting planets, from how your car moves to how your smartphone works.

Think of it as a way to see patterns in nature and say, “Ah, that’s why that happens.”

Physics itself does not change when you leave Earth. The fundamental laws appear to be the same throughout the observable universe. What changes are the conditions under which those laws operate.

On Earth, most of our everyday physics is dominated by:

Gravity from Earth

Atmospheric pressure

Friction

Magnetic effects

Dense matter interactions

A car moves because tires grip a road. An airplane flies because air flows across its wings. Both depend heavily on Earth’s atmosphere.

In space, those familiar conditions largely disappear.

No air.

No aerodynamic lift.

Almost no friction.

Vast distances.

Extreme gravitational differences.

As a result, motion becomes much more dynamic and often counterintuitive.

An airplane wing cannot generate lift because there is no atmosphere flowing over it.

A car engine is useless in empty space because there is no road to push against.

A spacecraft instead uses reaction forces:

rces:

F = ma

And

p = mv ( 2 dots moving towards each other and out from each other consistently. In and out)

A rocket throws mass one direction and moves the opposite direction.

What becomes especially important in space is gravity itself.

Near Earth, gravity feels like a constant downward pull.

In space, gravity becomes a landscape.

Spacecraft “fall” around planets.

Stars bend light.

Galaxies distort spacetime.

According to Albert Einstein, gravity is not really a force pulling objects. Instead, mass curves spacetime and objects follow those curves.

This means that movement in deep space becomes less like driving a car and more like navigating currents in an invisible ocean.

Modern physics also suggests that empty space is not truly empty.

Quantum theory predicts that even a perfect vacuum contains fluctuating fields and virtual particles. This is where ideas such as the “zero-point field” originate, although scientists do not yet agree that consciousness is connected to it.

“Earth physics teaches you how objects move through matter. Space physics teaches you how matter moves through spacetime itself. Beyond that lies a deeper question: what creates spacetime?”

That final question remains one of the biggest mysteries in modern physics.

Scientists have not yet unified:

  • Quantum mechanics (the very small)
  • General relativity (the very large)

The bridge between them—the true structure beneath space, time, matter, and energy—is still unknown.

That is where science currently reaches its frontier, and where philosophy, consciousness studies, and imagination begin asking questions that physics has not yet answered.
